Earlier this year, AI-generated fake audio of President Biden targeted voters in New Hampshire, sparking swift action from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC identified the perpetrator as the Texas-based Life Corporation, known for its involvement in similar scams over the years, and imposed a hefty $6 million fine on the company and an associated individual. However, the operation was also aided by Lingo Telecom, a game-shifting telecom company with a history of involvement in dubious activities.

Lingo Telecom, which has operated under various names, including Ameritel, Excel, Impact, Startec, and Trinsic, has now been fined $1 million by the FCC. The company has also agreed to comply with regulations moving forward, as the FCC emphasized the responsibility of telecom providers in preventing such scams. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel stated, “Communications service providers are the first line of defense against these threats and will be held accountable.”

The FCC’s action underscores the critical role that telecom companies play in curbing fraudulent activities and protecting consumers from AI-powered scams. By holding companies like Lingo Telecom accountable, the FCC aims to set a precedent that will deter other telecom providers from enabling similar schemes in the future.
