Meta is modifying the way it labels content edited or modified by AI tools on its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Starting next week, the “AI info” label, which previously appeared under the user’s name, will be moved to the post’s menu for content that has been altered using AI tools.
However, for content fully generated by AI, the label will still be displayed prominently under the post, ensuring transparency about its origin. Meta clarified that the label will indicate whether AI-generated content was flagged through industry signals or self-disclosure by the creator.
This change aims to “better reflect the extent of AI used in content,” according to Meta. The decision follows previous adjustments, such as the July change from the label “Made with AI” to “AI info” after concerns arose from photographers regarding mislabeled real photos.
Critics worry that making the AI label less visible could mislead users about content that has been AI-edited, especially as these tools become more sophisticated.
