In a significant shift, Google has announced the end of production for its iconic Chromecast streaming dongles. The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks the conclusion of an era that began over a decade ago with the launch of the original Chromecast in 2013.

While existing Chromecast devices will remain available “while supplies last,” Google has assured users that it will continue to provide software and security updates for its newer models. However, the specific devices that will receive ongoing support have not been detailed. The most recent addition to the Chromecast lineup was the Chromecast with Google TV, released in 2022.

Reflecting on the evolution of streaming technology, Google noted, “Technology has evolved dramatically since the launch of the original Chromecast. We invested heavily in embedding Google Cast technology into millions of TV devices, including Android TV.” The company emphasized that this move is part of a broader strategy to enhance smart TV capabilities, building on the foundation of Chromecast technology.

As a replacement for the Chromecast, Google has introduced the new Google TV Streamer, set to launch on September 24th at a price of $99.99. This set-top box boasts a processor that is 22 percent faster than the one in the Chromecast with Google TV and includes advanced features like Thread and Matter integration, positioning it as a strong competitor to the Apple TV 4K.

Despite the significant upgrades offered by the Google TV Streamer, the discontinuation of the Chromecast dongle is seen as a loss. The Chromecast with Google TV, priced at just $29.99, provided an affordable, entry-level option for users seeking an all-in-one streaming solution.
